OMAHA, NE – 12 May, 2017 – IIT Kharagpur Alumnus, Sundar Pichai (B Tech, 1993), was recently named as the highest paid American executive. Pichai became the CEO of Google in 2015 shortly after the company was reorganized under the Alphabet, Inc. holding company.
Born and raised to a middle-class family in Chennai, India, Pichai always held his academic studies to a high priority. He graduated from Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan for his primary schooling and then made his way to IIT Kharagpur, where he earned his B. Tech in Metallurgical Engineering. Pichai took a return trip to IIT Kharagpur in January of this year, which was the first time that he had been back on campus since he graduated some 23 years earlier. He spoke to a crowd of nearly 3,500 students about his time on campus and what IIT Kharagpur meant to him.
After his time at IIT Kharagpur, Pichai arrived at Stanford, earning a scholarship to study materials science and semiconductor physics on scholarship and earning his M.S. He originally planned to pursue a Ph.D. at Stanford, but decided to move on and join the workforce. After working for a few years, he saw benefit in the pursuance of a MBA at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He began his journey at Google in 2002 and has experienced continuous growth within his role and for Google ever since.
