Following the instructions twice made by President Xi Jinping on the development of the Grand Canal Cultural Belt, Yangzhou Canal Project has as its core philosophy the protection, use and ultimate inheritance of the Grand Canal’s historical resources. The forum, which is based on the theme “protection, inheritance and usage of the world canal city culture,” will show “Chinese actions” in comprehensively planned restoration of the Grand Canal, share experience in canal cultural practice worldwide, and exchange the developmental cases of canal cities in a bid to usher in a new post-world heritage era while pushing forward the protection of world canal heritage.
Additionally, the four parallel sub-forums, that is, the museum curator forum, a forum on cooperation in culture and tourism, the ecological development forum and the legislation forum for canals, will be initiated in response to the cultural, ecological, tourism and legislative concerns. They will provide a multi-functional dialogue space for such issues as canal culture studies, heritage protection, urban planning and ecological governance. With emphasis on the “Yangzhou model” in search of the scientific and effective harnessing of the Grand Canal, they will provide the world’s canal cities with valuable opportunities to explore new cooperation and build a global shared community of canals.
During the session of the forum, a series of supportive campaigns will be launched, including a picture show of China’s Grand Canal Relics, a seminar on hydrotechnics and wisdom of China’s Grand Canal (Yangzhou Section), a consultation on waterfront planning of the key Yangzhou Section of the Grand Canal, an award-presenting ceremony for the first international canal-themed micro movie show, a WCCO expert consultation and a WCCO cooperation talkfest. All are designed to pave the way for the protection of canal culture and the development of canal cities.
It has been 12 years since the World Canal Cities Forum was established. It has made headway in multiple dimensions such as the canal-city development modeling, international experience and mutual benefits, waterway culture inheritance and usage. Moreover, it has facilitated a multitude of protection projects, including the Jianghuai Ecological Corridor, and reached “Yangzhou consensus” on canal protection and application for accession to the list of world heritage. It is reported that the preparations for the 2019 World Canal Cities Forum will be announced at the forum and a recruitment system for international volunteers set up by the WCCO has been launched online. Future editions of the forum will make innovative use of China’s Grand Canal’s huge size and diverse heritage composition to connect the canal economies worldwide via linear connectivity and set up a canal cities’ enterprise network for linking services, capital and technology exchanges. Additionally, it will capitalize on the “Internet plus” mechanism to stand out as a permanent city forum.
Appreciate the canal culture in Yangzhou and seek cooperation and development worldwide. As strategic partners of the 2018 World Canal Cities Forum, China.org.cn and CNLive will present a cultural grand event that benefits the entire world.
