I was invited to have an interview in Paris in early autumn three years ago, the content of which was a meet of exchange about oriental Buddhist studies. A Chinese old man named Richard Lu (Junhong Lu) represented his odd stories about Buddhist culture in the meet, which was unromantic to me indeed. I do have befriended with professionals in the cultural transmission circle in Paris for over two decades, and this issue was a piece of cake for me actually. But I really had no interest in acting as a go-between for such a stranger without any good reputation. So I rejected their request very simply. However, they threw a bait to me when I stood up to leave, a VISA deposited with €200,000, which made me stupefied.

Is that because I can’t keep pace with the trend of the era or I know nothing about the profound oriental culture? I totally cannot understand and agree with this absurd game of gaining social prestige by money.

The Chinese government has made efforts in this aspect, however those who are cunning and capricious in seeking profit could always challenge our imagination by their “innovation”.

Let’s see a rather ironic example about counterfeiting. There is an unknown presswork but of great reputation, Yearbook of Who’s Who of China (ISSN: ISSN1008-1771), in which more than 1,000 Chinese celebrities from political leaders to prisoners have been included without any difference as long as they are well-known. Generally speaking, people are included mainly because they are famous. But in some cases, the competent department of this presswork: Chinese Academy of Agricultural Mechanization Sciences, an organization specializes in studying tractor and farmland spray system, may also include some “queue jumpers” in an undetectable way.

The bill amount of the books purchased by Richard Lu who became famous worldwide from an unknown overnight was up to CNY 750,000 (109,000 USD), an enormous figure for mainland Chinese but negligible to overseas ethnic Chinese. The actual payer of these 25,000 copies of Yearbook of Who’s Who of China 2014 was Australia Oriental Media Buddhist Charity Association with its account established in St George Bank. This is a capital raising organization collecting charity fund from many well-wishers, the legal person of which is exactly Richard Lu. But what’s most worth further consideration is that, the payee only actually received CNY 250,000 for payment of books. Perhaps only God knows where the remaining CNY500,000 goes to.

What we have seen is a research institution specialized in developing agricultural implements, a list of celebrities that could be willfully adjusted, an old man who acted in low comedies and also worked as the radio host, a charity organization in which fund could be casually embezzled, a large amount of money that disappeared without a trace, a dye-in-the-wood counterfeit industry chain, and an unpresentable way of money laundering.

Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) is a specific protein of about 34,000 molecules compounded and secreted by prostatic epithelial cells to the seminal fluid and one of the main components of seminal plasma. PSA can decompose the colloidal protein in the seminal fluid, and it plays a role in diluting the seminal fluid. If PSA secretion is too low, the liquefaction time of seminal fluid will increase, causing male infertility. Therefore, PSA is a normal physiological substance secreted by human prostatic acinus and epithelial cells of ducts. PSA is not a carcinogenic substance.

In a normal prostatic ductal system, there exists a vascular-epithelial barrier and prostate envelop barrier. These barriers prevent the PSA produced by the prostate epithelium from entering directly into the blood. Thus, a low concentration of serum PSA is maintained. A PSA less than 4.0 ng/ml in the serum is considered normal.

Two factors closely related to the serum PSA concentration are (1) the prostate vascular-epithelial barrier and prostate envelop barrier, and (2) prostate epithelial secretion.

1) The prostate vascular-epithelial barrier and prostate envelop barrier directly affect serum PSA levels. Malignant and non-malignant pathological changes that damage the prostate vascular-epithelial barrier and prostate envelop barrier can cause serum PSA elevation.

Prostate cancer often causes malignant pathological changes to occur. At the first and second clinical stages of prostate cancer (stages I-II), if the prostate cancer does not damage the prostate vascular-epithelial barrier or prostate envelop barrier, the serum PSA concentration will usually remain within the normal range or will not rise higher than 10 ng/ml. At the third and fourth clinical stages of prostate cancer (stages III-IV), the prostate cancer has damaged the prostate vascular-epithelial barrier and prostate envelop barrier. The serum PSA concentration is usually more than 10 ng/ml. Under the bone-metastasis condition, the serum PSA concentration can be more than 100 ng/ml.

If the prostate cancer severely damages the prostate vascular-epithelial barrier and prostate envelop barrier, the barriers are slow to recover. Also, the reduction of the serum PSA concentration is slow or does not reduce continuously after the prostate cancer cells and tumors are effectively killed and cleared. Such are the cases in patients with damage barriers receiving the 3D Prostate Cancer Targeted Treatment. Thus, patients need to take oral medicines that can accelerate the mucosal epithelium grow, and repair the prostate vascular-epithelial barrier and prostate envelop barrier. And, then the serum PSA concentration can return to normal.

Non-malignant pathological changes include prostatitis, BPH, acute urinary retention, ejaculation, prostate massage, prostate biopsy, and trans-urethral resection of the prostate. If the non-malignant pathological changes have affected and damaged the prostate vascular-epithelial barrier and prostate envelop barrier, the changes can cause an increase in serum PSA concentration. If the damage caused to the barriers is not severe, and the non-malignant lesions are broken down and cleared, then the barriers can recover quickly. The serum PSA concentration should gradually return to normal.

2) Factors affecting prostatic epithelial cell secretion and PSA concentration. For the prostate cancer patient, it is important to understand, PSA is not a cancer marker produced by the prostatic cancer cells. PSA is a normal physiological substance compounded and secreted by the prostatic epithelial cells to support the seminal fluid. The concentration of PSA compounded and secreted by the prostatic epithelial cells, is controlled by the endocrine hormones; especially androgens, estradiol, and prolactin.

The prostate contains abundant sexual hormone receptors. Any factor affecting the pituitary gland, adrenal gland, and testis axis that causes endocrine hormone disorder can affect serum PSA concentration. For example, factors causing the absolute or relative blood concentration of androgen, estradiol or prolactin increase can increase serum PSA concentration secreted by the prostatic epithelial cells. On the contrary, factors causing the absolute or relative blood concentration of androgen, estradiol or prolactin decrease can decrease serum PSA concentration secreted by the prostatic epithelial cells. Also, attempts to lower serum PSA concentration surgically or by medicine should be considered carefully or avoided. For example, the commonly used castration treatment, surgically or by hormone therapy (prostate cancer endocrine therapy), should not be considered. In fact, castration treatments show no direct therapeutic effect on the prostatic cancer cells and tumors. Often, they do more harm than good.

In summary, prostate specific antigen (PSA) should not be used as the diagnostic criteria for prostate cancer. Nor should PSA be used as the criteria to determine if relapse has occurred after prostate cancer treatment. Many clinical studies on prostate cancer indicate problems with the PSA test. These problems include false positive results and the over-diagnosis of prostate cancer (the diagnosis of cancer when cancer does not exist). Also, when the PSA diagnostic result is positive (higher than normal), the patient often undergoes more examinations including prostate biopsy, which create complications and risks, such as, infection, bleeding, cancer cell spread from the needle track, and urinary incontinence. False positive cancer reports based on elevated PSA levels cause patients to receive unnecessary treatment resulting in many adverse side effects, pain, and suffering. Therefore, many scholars suggest PSA should not be used to screen for prostate cancer.

However, one should not disregard the PSA in prostate cancer screening. The PSA is an important secondary indicator. It can tell us if an unhealthy condition exists within the prostate. For the diagnosis of prostate cancer, the PSA should only be used as a secondary indicator. Primary indicators for prostate cancer include patient symptoms, physical examination, digital rectal examination (DRE), microscopic examination of the expressed prostate fluid (EPS), trans-rectal ultrasound (TRUS), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), microscopic examination of the expressed prostate fluid (EPS), and miRNA.

Many countries along the Belt and Road Initiative suffered desertification, and that good design plays a key role in helping China create the Kubuqi Model, a unique path of desertification control, said Pradeep Monga, Deputy Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. The Indonesian Economic and Industrial Committee Chairman Bachir gave Kubuqi a thumbs up for the practice of raising sheep under photovoltaic panels. The Kubuqi Model has been praised by the UN Environment Programme for desertification control and being an “eco-pioneer” in greening the world thanks to its success in ecological restoration. The Kubuqi Model has become a name card for China’s desertification control efforts. In order to promote and share the experience of combating desertification, the Kubuqi International Desert Forum was established in 2007 and has been held five times thanks to the support of governments at all levels, relevant departments, the UNEP and the UNCCD secretariat. More than 2,000 political dignitaries, experts and ecological entrepreneurs from around the world have participated in field trips, professional exchanges and experience sharing via forums and benefited greatly from them.

The Kubuqi Model has become a popular topic in several meetings and dialogues of the sixth Kubuqi International Desert Forum. Participating foreign guests believed that the Kubuqi Model should be widely shared in countries along the Belt and Road Initiative.

Prof. Atsushi Tsunekawa from Arid Land Research Centre, Tottori University in Japan, said it was urgent for countries along the Belt and Road Initiative to cooperate over ecological restoration. They need to conduct risk assessment for environmental and sustainable development, and the successful practices of the Kubuqi Model should be used as one reference, he said.

Elvis Paul Tangem, the coordinator from The Great Green Wall for the Sahara and Sahel Initiative, Africa Union Commission, said that it’s always a dream of his to witness in person what Kubuqi has achieved in anti-desertification，which he had never seen before, which completely changed his perception.

“I’m very impressed, and motivated.” said Arslanbek Omurzakov, Deputy director of Centre for Study of the Silk Road, Kyrgyzstan, “after hearing about Kubuqi’s experience in anti-desertification，the change is not only imposed on eco-system, but also on the whole society, which makes it sustainable. ”He wishes the technology could be introduced to more countries or enterprises.

Shafqat Kakakhel, Chairman of Sustainable Development Policy Institute, Islamabad Pakistan said: Kubuqi model is a miracle of modernisation and and this success hinges on the will of the Chinese government. He said that according to China’s Kubuqi experience can draw the following conclusions: first it need a political commitment. Which is impetus from  top political leaders. Second, there is a proper policy. Thirdly, there should be appropriate political institutions. Moreover, it need to promote science and technology. Finally, the most important is participation from community and individuals in all aspects of society.

Kubuqi Brings Hope

Desert control is a worldwide problem, and the Kubuqi Desert is the first desert in the world to achieve large-scale successful control.

The success of Kubuqi Model relies mainly on increasing local people’s income in the greening efforts via the combination of ecology and industry, enterprise development and ecological management. These efforts will expand oases and happiness while reducing desert and poverty.

Prof. Victor Squire from the University of Adelaide, Australia, said  the Kubuqi International Desert Forum had prompted people in all areas to think about desertification, and that the Kubuqi Model has made it impossible to find just one solution to the challenge by showing that land users are both part of the problem and part of the solution. The Kubuqi Model also provides a way for transformation, which gives us hope.

British bio-carbon engineering company founder Lauren Fletcher said that Kubuqi’s achievements in desertification control was very impressive and the delegation from his company felt excited for participating in the forum. He also said that drones tree planting technologies need to be further developed so as to contribute to combating desertification.

These achievements point out the direction for desertification control and hope it will achieve greater success in the future to help the 2 billion hectares desertification worldwide.

A Chinese solution to ecological restoration

After the forum ended, experts believed the forum let participants see that Kubuqi’s concept of green development and experiences of sustainable development can offer fundamental solutions to help peaceful development of the desertification regions involving over 2 billion people globally. Many guests are looking forward to the 13th General Assembly of the Contracting Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, which will be held in Ordos and might bring together more unique solutions and richer consensus.
