The city of Tulsa hosted a second meeting for the possible redevelopment of a massive project that will transform 30 blocks around the BOK Arena on Tuesday, July 24.

The aim of the project is to make the Arena District a bigger and better part of the city. Held at the Tulsa Community College Metro Campus, Thomas McKeon Center for Creativity, the two-hour meeting elaborated on the goals of the project—which includes promoting redevelopment and growth, forming stronger ties between the 30-block area and the rest of downtown, and giving the Arena District a better brand.

“Hopefully, we can kind of build off some of the excitement, the community involvement from the May meeting and carry this through. We have a couple more months, and we should be wrapping the planning effort for this project up,” said City Planner, James McHendry in a report.

McHendry noted that “they’re trying to come up with a roadmap to improving the area around the BOK Center and Cox Business Center, and not just for Tulsans.”

“The Arena District or Arena Area is some visitors’ only exposure to the city. And so, we’d really like to find a way to tell a story. Hopefully, we’ll be doing that through some dynamic public art, landmarks and some placemaking efforts,” McHendry said.

The City of Tulsa growing closer to creating a tourism-based improvement district that would transform a limited-use area into a thriving year-round tourist destination. The Arena District current has nearly 2 million visitors a year, thanks to massive concerts at the BOK and a lot of traffic at the Convention Center.

These days, convention centers are not just for meetings, people don’t just come to the meeting and leave, it’s a destination. And so, what can we do to attract more people, and create a destination that’s interconnected to the other districts?” said Subha Sridharan and architect with Forest For the Trees who is a part of the master plan workshop.

One the major attractions for tourist is the Tulsa Greek Festival which returns for its 58th year as Tulsa’s oldest ethnic festival. The festival features original Greek food, drinks, music, dancing, and a lot more. Starting Thursday, September 20th, the festival continues every day until Sunday, September 23 — where visitors can spend their day sipping coffee, shopping and enjoying brilliant performances from dancers of all ages.

With the current expansion plans and upcoming festivals, tourists would have a lot of sight-seeing to do and hiring a car for a foreign getaway is usually a great idea. From freedom to finances, the inconvenience of flagging down a taxi are eliminated and tourists are presented the opportunity to see a country for what it has to offer and there’s plenty of fun to be had along the way.

The Arena District master plan is a Vision Tulsa–funded project and in July, a $55 million renovation of the Cox Business Center in Tulsa was launched.

“Through the strong support in our city for the Vision Tulsa program, the investments that we will make in our Cox Business Center will keep Tulsa at a competitive advantage and serve as a vital project for our tourism industry,” Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum said in a release.

“These improvements will help enhance our tourism client base and improve the experience for Tulsans and visitors that utilize the venue.”

The German American Social Club (GASC) of Cape Coral has chosen its next Mrs. Oktoberfest.

24-year-old Cheyenne Schwind was announced the winner, while Savannah Liebegott was first runner up and second runner up, Tanja Lambertus.

The winner will represent the club as “the face of Oktoberfest 2018”, scheduled for two weekends, Oct. 19-21 and Oct. 26-28 at the German American Social Club.

Crowned Mrs. Oktoberfest 2018, Schwind has inherited a lot of responsibilities. She will make appearances in the club’s commercials ad TV/print advertising for the Oktoberfest and will take part in all activities during the two-week long event. Schwind is expected to learn the German cultural dancing styles, as well as some of the languages—as she will be addressing the public in both German and English.

“This is outside of my comfort zone, but I wanted to do it because it’s an honor to represent my community and gives me a chance to learn about my heritage,” she said in a report.

Unlike most, Schwind already has lots of historic knowledge—as she has been attending the Cape Coral Oktoberfest with her Oma and Opa since she was a little child—and has had a continuous close-up view on what the position of Mrs. Oktoberfest entails.

“They worked all the time for the family business, Geier’s Sausage Kitchen, but they always made sure to take us grandkids there every year,” she said of her grandparents. “Also, my sister was Ms. Oktoberfest 2015 and I saw how welcoming the Club was and how there was a family atmosphere and how great it is to be more involved in our heritage.”

Nakita Egloff, her sister, said she will be supporting and mentoring her sister through the entire process, but Schwind will also have the unwavering support of a wealth of GASC community members assisting her with her roles and responsibilities.

Mrs. Oktoberfest 2017, Christine Kellerman and Oktoberfest organizer, Teresa Kohl, presented the honorary pageant sash to Schmidt.

“I’m very excited to begin volunteering and pouring beers with the GASC instead of just sitting down and looking pretty – although it’s been fun,” said Kellerman during the presentation.

The Cape Coral Oktoberfest is the largest party of the year in the Cape. Over the past decade the festival has attracted an average of around six million visitors a year, who consume almost seven million litres of beer and eat their way through thousands of grilled sausages, chickens, giant pretzels and wild oxen.

This year, tourists are expected to troop-in in numbers as 28 musicians are set to fly in from Germany to provide live, authentic entertainment. Its fame and popularity mean that Oktoberfest is a massive crowd-puller and as a constant, accommodation and transport have to be booked well in advance. “We are cooking up a very cool surprise for Oktoberfest,” said manager Jenny Haenschen.

Founded as a non-political organization in July 1964, the German-American Social Club of Cape Coral began with a charter membership of 34. The purpose of the Club, right from inception is “to promote good fellowship with a variety of social activities, to perpetuate traditional German festivals such as Oktoberfest, Karneval, costume balls, folk dances and more to stimulate interest in the German language and customs.”

“You don’t have to be German to be a part of this club,” said GASC President, Robert Kraft.

The State Fair of Texas has announced many new attractions that will be on offer during its run later this year from September 28 through October 21 in Dallas. The theme for its 132nd year is “Celebrating Texas Innovation.”

“From America’s first self-contained modern shopping center, stadium nachos, iconic corn chips, the frozen margarita machine, handheld calculators, to even corny dogs, several of the world’s favorite creations were introduced right here in the Lone Star State,” said a State Fair news release.

 The fair has occurred every year since 1886—except for varying periods during World War I and World War II—and is still consistently recognized as “one of the most highly attended and best state fairs in America as well as Dallas’s signature event.”

According to the 2017 State Fair of Texas Annual Report, the Fair attracted a total of 2,250,433 attendees during the 2017 event with roughly 93,000 daily guests. Here are some of the new attractions to be on display at the State Fair of Texas:

Football Game

The State Fair will host the annual historic Texas-OU game and also one of the most entertaining halftime shows out there—with the State Fair Classic featuring Grambling State University and Prairie View A&M.

However, this year a new face-off will be added to the State Fair Showdown: a football game between Texas Southern University and Southern University.

Livestock birthing barn

Attendees at this year’s fair can go into the new birthing barn and watch and learn as pregnant animals birth their babies.

Karissa Condoianis, spokesperson for the State Fair of Texas, said her team noticed that fairgoers had shown great interest in watching and learning about animal births.

“We’ve been asked about it for many years,” said Condoianis. “The goal would be to have a birth every day, but these are real animals.”

The exhibit will also explain the role of breeding in agriculture.

Music Concert

The organizers of the State Fair announced the A-list lineup for this year’s concert, featuring hip-hop rapper Ludacris, country heartthrob Hunter Hayes, Prince collaborators Morris Day and the Time, Christian rock band Casting Crowns, among others.

Amazing Stunt shows

A new performance called Amazing Archery will be introduced in this year’s line of activities featuring Frank Addington, Jr., who will “hit targets as small as an aspirin”.

Also, the All-Star Stunt Dog Show will be in attendance showcasing rescue dogs’ talents, including jump-roping and juggling.

Agricultural Exhibition

A new exhibition tagged Innovations in Agriculture will be premiered at the fair’s Big Tex Urban Farms—an organic farm that produces crops year-round and donates them to community members in southern Dallas—and gardeners would get the opportunity to learn about DIY growing systems for their own backyards.

Mitchell Glieber, president of the State Fair of Texas, said he believes the theme supports the event’s mission to educate Texans.

“We aim to inspire future innovators by offering exhibits and activities that are both educational and entertaining,” he said.

Tickets for this year’s State Fair go on sale Aug. 1 while season passes went on sale June 1 at BigTex.com.
